Tips and tricks for NewsPro
- PLEASE read over the stuff at http://www.usenetopia.com as it is very helpful.
- Make SURE to use different databases if you use a lot of binary groups. Make a database for MP3s, one for software, one for movies, etc. This keeps things quick and you wont run into issues later
- NEVER NEVER NEVER force NewsPro to exit by killing the task in task manager. The database will get corrupted!
- When you select multiple headers, the number of articles selected will appear in the title of the main window. This is a quick way to make sure you have a complete set of posts
- Attach a filter that shows only new and files with attachments (I provide the one I use in the How To) for binary groups. This makes it very easy to see what's been posted since your last header download
- Don't open too many newsgroups at once if you don't have 1 GB (or more) of memory. I have seen NewsPro suck up 600 MB of memory on my box when opening large virtual groups.
- Try to keep virtual newsgroups as specific as possible. This is related to the last tip. If you try to add too may groups to one virtual group, performance will suffer
- Filters, while very helpful, can slow down performance a bit when marking things as old, etc. I find it best to let NewsPro do this on the next startup. See Properties...General...Reset new headers on restart for more
- Use NPDL manager to manage your downloads. It's free and will definitely save you time
